LATVIA/LATVIA

DAUGHTER OF THE SUN: The Latvia Project opens this week as part of an evening called LATVIA/LATVIA.

Image

Originally simply, The Latvia Project, DAUGHTER OF THE SUN, is the latest incarnation of this piece developed by warner|shaw over the last several years with support from LMCC, The Paul Artist Residency at Indiana University, and Dixon Place.

ImageDAUGHTER OF THE SUN: The Latvia Project is an intersection of mythology, history and identity.  A Lecturer boldly goes off syllabus only to have her own hero, the sun goddess Saule, intervene, and school her on cultural appropriation, self-reliance, and what it means to write your own origin story.  Using the History of Latvia, the Dainas of Saule and the family artifacts that link us to our own past, DAUGHTER OF THE SUN asks us to confront the question “where are you from?”

A young woman finds herself trapped in a marriage she didn’t agree to. Though she longs to escape back to the comfortable protection of her mother, she also yearns for freedom from the safety and boundaries of childhood. As she tells her story, a tension develops—a pull between innocence and experience. Is she merely a victim, the first Stockholm Syndrome case? Or does she secretly revel in her new life as wife to Hades and Queen of the Underworld?

Six Seeds is intimate and epic, a beautiful retelling of a classic story that continues to deeply influence our modern world.

Save the Date: 5/8 Mother’s Day

Forget brunch, this Mother’s Day take your mama, your baby mama or just your totally grown up, independent self to celebrate (or commiserate) with stories, songs and two for one drinks at The Delancey. Whether your mother was a goddess of love and support or a smothering bitch, your inner child will laugh, cry and try not to poop its pants at Mother May I, a night of performances by writers, actors and singers in honor of mothers. There’s a woman somewhere who you owe your life to, and we want to thank her. Join us for stories, lullabies and comedy. We won’t judge your outfit or your date.

All proceeds from this Mother’s Day benefit will support warner | shaw and its upcoming production of SIX SEEDS: The Persephone Project at The Tank.
